Let's Go Surfing!

Zig & I had a surfing lesson on Bondi Beach Saturday, thanks to our friends Rod & Li who gave us the lesson as a gift before we left NYC. The surf school is Let's Go Surfing and the instructor was really excellent, and not at all like some poser from Baywatch The Musical (oh, you didn't know there was one?). Luckily, everybody in our group was cool and just as doofusish as we were in the water.

Like many New Yorkers who have never surfed before, here are a few quick impressions:

• when you're on the surfboard, you can go really, REALLY fast. Also, there was no way to turn off the waves, the way they used to do at the surf pool at Kings Island Amusement Park in Ohio.
• you're lucky if you can stand up on the board the first time out. Tip from instructor: "keep that ass up -- I said ASS UP!"
• surfers must be in great shape, as every single muscle in our bodies are now aching as we contemplate simpler athletic pursuits, such as eating jello. (But nothing strenuous, like with fruit in it or anything.)

Anyway, we did pretty well for our first lesson:
