Bats!!

We totally groove on the huge bats that rule Sydney's skies at night. There's an enormous colony that lives in the trees of the Botanic Garden and, every twilight, they take off and can be seen all across the sky and above the harbour, heading for nearby feeding areas. At first, you would think they were large crows.

Each evening around 6pm, we can see large groups of them flying past our terrace, and some landing in the blossoming trees around our building. Not exactly subtle either, they're really quite loud. Not for the squeamish, but totally harmless...unless you're Don King.

In fact, they are called Flying Foxes and feed on fruit and nectar. The Botanic Garden has tried unsuccessfully for years to get rid of the colony there, as the huge numbers are bad for the trees, even trying python excrement.

One time we were in the Garden at twilight under a full moon, just as the bats were busy squawking loudly and getting ready to take off for the night. Here's a video clip...minus the moment when one pissed on my leg.
