Killing Kangaroos

Last week, the Australian military started culling (read: "killing") more than 400 grey kangaroos at one of its bases near the capital city of Canberra.

The military says it has to slaughter the kangaroos -- and many joeys (babies) -- to thin the overpopulated herd and prevent starvation over the winter. There have been protests at the site daily from both white and aboriginal demonstrators, who point out that the government is spending more money to shoot the animals than it would have cost to relocate them. The group Animal Liberation had been raising money to do just that.

No help from the new Minister of the Environment, Peter Garrett. Yes, the same bald guy who was lead singer of Midnight Oil.

Personally, I'd love to see them relocated to Prospect Park.
